University of Cape Town

REES 2019 will be in Cape Town, a port city on the southwest coast of South Africa and the legislative capital of the country. The city of Cape Town is diverse and multicultural and boasts the oldest, and one of the most prestigious universities in the country, the University of Cape Town (UCT). UCT is regarded as having one of the most beautiful campuses in the world, with its main teaching campus (Upper Campus) situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain.

However, this is only one of six campuses. The Graduate School of Business is located on the Breakwater Lodge Campus at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront to the north of Table Mountain (and providing the view from which it actually looks like a table!). It is here that REES 2019 will be held.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is a hub of activity in the city and is situated in the oldest working harbour in South Africa. It attracts over 23 million visitors a year and caters to Cape Town’s vibrant tourist industry. In fact, the Breakwater Lodge Protea Hotel is just next to the Graduate School of Business and is taking care of the conference logistics. Most of South Africa receives its rain in the summer but Cape Town is situated in a winter rainfall region. The last three years have seen particularly poor rains but at the time of writing (May 2018) better rains are alleviating city water shortages (click here for updated information about the situation). In the hope of better weather, you are encouraged to bring a jacket and umbrella with you: July average temperatures: High 17°C (63°F) – Low 7°C (45°F); July average rainfall: 100 mm (3.94 in.); July rainfall days: 14.

Foreign citizens wishing to enter South Africa must be in possession of a valid passport. While citizens from a good number of countries are exempt from visa requirements, countries for which South Africa does require a visa must obtain one from a South African diplomatic mission.
